180 Store Closings... A More Exclusive Abercrombie & Fitch by 2015

Promotions at Abercrombie & Fitch!  |  Image by Chris K for Reuters.

Jaw dropping? You read right. Abercrombie & Fitch Co anticipates that it will be closing up to 180 stores in the United States by the year 2015...

The news comes after the release of the fourth quarter (Q4) results for Fiscal 2011. In the earnings disclosure made on February 15, Mike Jeffries (Chairman & Chief Executive Officer) commented that  "our results for the fourth quarter were below our expectations in an extremely challenging environment." He is primarily referring to operations in America were Christmas 2011 was a competitive season of mass promotions - "a more aggressive promotional environment than expected" - with intense discounts dished out to lure in consumers during the holiday season. Not only that, but the Company also faced higher cotton costs. Furthermore, this winter season has been one of the mildest on record in the United States and this notably affected sales on items like outerwear and fleece (i.e. hoodies, sweapants, etc). In conclusion, there was a 56.1% gross profit rate - 750 basis points lower than Q4 Fiscal 2010.

However, that is not to say that Abercrombie & Fitch is "going down." The Company reported a record revenue of US$4.158 billion for Fiscal 2011!  Including American and international sales, the Abercrombie & Fitch brand experienced an increase of 3%. Despite this, though, gross profit rate for the year came in at 60.6%, or 320 basis points lower than Fiscal 2010. Sales are up, primarily because of the growth in international markets (a 63% growth!), but profits are down because of increases in average unit costs and markdowns.

So it is that the Company expects to be closing 180 stores, in America, by 2015, after overlooking the performance of its corporate-wide stores of 1,045 (by the end of Fiscal 2011; 28 January 2012). Underperforming stores will be shuttered. Also, the closings will not be exclusive to the Abercrombie & Fitch brand. They may also be affecting abercrombie kids, but less likely Hollister-branded stores. Nevertheless, A&F stores will make up a significant portion of the 180 closings.

The whole thing must not be completely taken as a bad thing. Times are changing in the consumer world. People used to shop more in stores than online. Now sales from e-commerce and mobile operations are higher than ever for Abercrombie & Fitch with the increase in the sophistication of online and mobile retail technology. Thus, it's not necessary to maintain under-performing stores at all - they can go. Furthermore, it is a move to improve profit; and the decline in store count, primarily for Abercrombie & Fitch branded, stores will enforce and further raise the exclusivity of the brand in the American market: "By closing more of these lower-tier, underperforming stores, we'll be able to lift up the entire brand, particularly A&F," offered Jonathan Ramsden, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Abercrombie & Fitch Co.

Store closings may not be exciting (especially not to the employees), but we are currently witnessing a sweeping movement in the evolution of the A&F brand. Re-opened in 1992 as a youth fashion retailer, Abercrombie & Fitch experienced great expansion and peaked at 350+ store by 2008 before the global recession began. By then, the brand commanded a near-luxury image and international expansion commenced in world class cities. Now, as the 2010s unfold, the brand will continue its overseas plans in the luxury content while lowering its store count in the United States to likely under 200 stores. Online and mobile sales will continuously rise and e-commerce operations will be further refined with IBM 'smarter commerce'...and all this with the goal of maintaining profit and health. The result will be a future more exclusive Abercrombie & Fitch unlike ever before...

Abercrombie in Paris... A Consumer Attraction in the World's 6th Most Expensive City

The Economist Intelligence Unit has released its report on the world's most expensive cities to in. Who took the number one spot? Zurich, Switzerland! Tokyo in Japan only came second this year; and Geneva and Osaka, both in Switzerland and in Japan, respectively, came in tied to the #3 spot!

The Huffington Post made an article - 'Most Expensive City To Live In The World Survey' - highlighting the report. It also included a slideshow of the cities in which Paris came in at number 6. And for Paris, Huffington used a picture of Abercrombie & Fitch in Paris back when it was promoting the opening of the flagship store last year...

Très cool, oui?!

A&F Paris is addressed at 23 Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Champs-Élysées is the City of Lights' most revered and historical thoroughfare. So, naturally, Abercrombie & Fitch has become a major consumer attraction on the avenue and one of the most intriguing retail experiences in the famed capital of fashion!

Spotted on the Screen! | Dixon Dressed in Abercrombie for '90210' Valentine!

An anonymous reader pointed out a Valentine by the American television teen drama 90210 featuring actor Tristan Wilds as the popular character, Dixon Wilson... And he just so happens to be wearing an A&F classic shirt!

He wears it too baggy, but to each his own thing, right? LOL

Although the card was not on TV, it's still an onscreen character wearing A&F so it's still considered 'Spotted on the Screen', but it's also 'Celebrities in Fitch.'

If you happen to catch Abercrombie or Hollister on TV or in movies or whatever, then just give The Sitch on Fitch a shout out at anfnewsnow@aol.com or leave a comment below. Provide a picture if you can in your email or a link!

Corporate Report! | Fiscal 2011 Summary and Fiscal 2012 Outlook...

Looking forward to a fantastic 2012!
This is very, very wonderful and exciting news for everybody!

On February 15, Abercrombie & Fitch Co released its Fiscal 2011 results along with its outlook for Fiscal 2012! Read ahead because this is going to make any A&F fan's day!

Fiscal 2011

Fiscal 2011 for A&F began on 30 January 2011 and ended on 28 January 2012. Check out the highlights from the report...

  • Abercrombie & Fitch Co surpasses the US$4,000,000,000 mark in revenue with a total Company haul-in of US$4.158 billion! That's a 20% increase from Fiscal 2010!
    • That figure includes US$3.108 billion, a 10% increase from 2010, in America and...
    • US$1.050 billion, a 63% increase from 2010, in international sales.
  • The Abercrombie & Fitch brand made US$1.665 billion in total sales
  • The abercrombie kids brand made US$398 million in total sales
  • The Hollister brand made US$2.022 billion in total sales. This is historic for Hollister which has now surpassed the US$2,000,000,000 mark. Also of note for this historic figure is the coincidence of '22' - the fictional '1922' establishment of Hollister - in the figures.
  • There was no report of Gilly Hicks. However, totaling the sales for A&F, abercrombie, and HCo brings US$4.085 billion which leaves only US$73 million for total sales for the Gilly Hicks brand!
  • US$437.1 million were spent on marketing and general and administrative expenses.
  • The Company spent a total of US$316.6 million for new stores and renovations, and that includes US$60 million spent on information technology and other Home Office (headquarters) projects.
  • In conclusion, the Company (including all brands) opened 47 stores internationally and closed 71 stores in the United States; and the Company came out with US$127.7 million in net income.

Fiscal 2012 outlook

The financial stuff for the bygone year is interesting, but every year the most exciting thing to finally get to in these reports is the outlook for the coming year! In the outlook is where you get info on what stores are opening! And you are really gonna like this...

We already knew that Abercrombie & Fitch is on track to open in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Hong Kong, and Munich. For the Irish, however, this little piece is the best part of all... After much delay and uncertainty, A&F is totally opening in Dublin this year! So hot!

But that is not even the half of it! The Amsterdam and Munich flagship stores for Abercrombie & Fitch will also be having an abercrombie kids store of their own like in Milan and Düsseldorf!

Oh, and also confirmed to open this year is the first ever abercrombie kids in the United Kingdom! Not only that, but it will be the first stand-alone abercrombie kids flagship store in the world! It will be located at the notable 3 Savile Row where The Beatles made their last live performance in January 1969! Read more on this (here) on The Sitch on Fitch!

And! And! Hollister will be opening nearly 40 more international stores in 2012! This will include 10 more stores in Germany, as well as a few in the UK, and some more in China!

To support its fantastic expansion plans, Abercrombie & Fitch anticipates spending up to US$400 million in Fiscal 2012! This fiscal year began on January 29, the Spring season launched on February 8, and store openings will begin to kick off by late-March!

You can read the complete summary report for yourself (here) from A&F Investors... We're gonna have one totally unforgettable 2012! Cheers!

One of the hottest A&F Looks for guys this season takes a nautical East Coast of America spin!

Sleeves and jeans rolled up with a pair of awesome boat shoes make for a prepster cool attitude ready for sail! Yeah, Abercrombie called it "Ready for the game." If it meant sailing then we're so onboard!

But you don't need to hit the docks to wear this look! It's perfect casual cool with a nod to East Coast tradition that looks great for a classic chill day wherever. Together - the Rocky Falls jacket (red, US$120), the Baker Mountain tee (white, US$34), and A&F Skinny destroyed jeans (US$88) - the look comes at a total of US$242 full price. Remembering Whitney Houston and Her Vocals at Abercrombie and RUEHL...

In light of her death and in honor of Whitney Houston, I want to note her notable appearances on the Abercrombie & Fitch playlists as one of the greatest artists to have ever been featured...
  • Whatchulookinat - featured on the September 2002 A&F Playlist
    • Listen to the song (here)
  • Try It Own My Own (Club Anthem Edit) - featured on the February 2003 A&F Playlist
    • The exact remix is unavailable. Listen to the Thunderpuss remix (here)
  • I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)(Junior's Happy Handbag Mix) - featured on the March 2008 A&F Playlist
    • Listen to the song (here)
  • Could I Have This Kiss Forever (feat. Enrique Iglesias) - featured on the Ruehl No.925 Spring and Summer 2009 playlists.
    • Listen to the song (here)
  •  I Will Always Love You (Hex Hector Mix) - featured on the Spring 2012 playlist which was eerily released two days before her death. (This bullet is a 14 February 2012 update)

The remixes to her songs for the A&F Playlist, upbeat and alive, played it all cool within Abercrombie & Fitch stores. Her duet with Enrique Iglesias was one of the best songs to have ever played along with the romance of Ruehl No.925. Listening to it always reminds me of the seductive, sensual, and aspirational wonder that was Ruehl. And the Throw Down disc two on her Whitney: The Greatest Hits is just awesome! I first listened to it back in Christmas 2010 and I completely imagined some of those remixes blasting inside A&F Fifth Avenue! It's that good! That CD was like a soundtrack to my Christmas that year along with the A&F Family playlists. In fact, I also remember listening to I'm Every Woman (Clivilles & Cole Mix) while working on a post for Gilly Hicks when the brand opened its first international store in London: I thought, "This song totally needs to be played inside Gilly Hicks stores!" Just an undeniably fantastic artist...

Whitney Houston was pronounced dead inside the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on February 11 at 4:00pm (Pacific Standard Time) / 7:00 (Eastern Standard Time); and, soon afterwards, national television programming was interrupted on channel ABC, here in America, to announce her death with a special report. A great tragedy on the eve of the biggest night in music, news of her passing hit deep and hard in the hearts of many and spread far and wide throughout media and social networking around the world...

A winner of six Grammy Awards, Whitney Houston was honored and remembered at the 54th Grammy Awards ceremony on February 12 as a tribute to her life and for her profound contributions to music. A woman gifted with one of the most beautiful voices in modern music, she gave the world a great and magnificent body of work which has come to touch many worldwide and influenced the likes of Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Lady Gaga, and Adele. (Most of those singers have also had their songs played on Abercrombie & Fitch playlists).

A beautiful woman, a wonderful artist, Whitney Houston will always be present in human culture as one of the greatest stars - a phenomenal singer - in the art of music...

I will always love you, Whitney,
C.E.R., editor-in-chief

Game On! Abercrombie & Fitch Spring 2012 films - Part One...

Nothing going on but the game...  |   (image source)
Remember the video from THE MAIN EVENT that was aired exclusively (for the opening of A&F Singapore) on the overhead electronic screen of 270 Orchard Road? For Spring 2012, Abercrombie & Fitch has decided to share it to the rest of the world...

Raw and passionate, the 1 minute 30 second film is now available at A&F Experience on abercrombie.com along with two other short films! Focused on the disciplined sport of wrestling, this video is the triumphant return of good ole Abercrombie guy-on-guy action - we're talking sports-wise, of course! Heated sensuality courses through the intensity of the film as Tonight (Steve Forest & Nicalo Fasano Mix), by Nicola Fasano featuring Kat Deluna, plays to the intimate dance of strength and wit between man and man...

Check out our brutally awesome highlights from one of this season's hottest films! Seriously, each one of these screenshots deserve to be framed as works of art...

This film is classic Abercrombie - a throwback to the days when A&F ostentatiously promoted its romanticism for male athleticism.

It begins homoerotically suggestive, insinuating a much deeper desire and passion. Such is expressed in the men's faces during the initial scenes of the film as the sensual lyricism of Kat Deluna plays along:

"Estoy[I am] ready / just listen to the beat so high. So caliente[hot] / I feel the rhythm to the light. Full of story / gonna have some fun with you right now. No tengas miedo[don't have fear] / don't start to dance until dawn. We've gotta skip the peasantries. I've gotta feel the rhythm in my vein. So don't be shy / well break it high. So I can get more thrills tonight...don't break the magic of the moment...I would like to get to know you..."

Nevertheless, the video is an overall artististic representation of the emotions and physical expressions, which act out full of energy and animation, when man is pinned against man in the sport of wrestling. But, yeah, it's also meant to look hot as hell!

An impressive production, this is the best short film released by Abercrombie & Fitch since the greatness of A&F Screen Test back in July-September 2010. Obviously, it is also the work of the phenomenal Bruce Weber!

So head on over to A&F Experience (here) on abercrombie.com here in the US - or 'A&F Experience', if available, in your respective abercrombie.com websites, European and Asian readers - to experience the film for yourself...

Again, this is brutally awesome and completely on fire!
