Hollister Co. Parody in Grand Theft Auto's Newest Game...

Screenshot of parody Hollister in GTA 5.
Image used for illustrative purposes only.
We've all heard of the infamous Grand Theft Auto game series and their sometimes crude humor. Nonetheless, most people, including myself (new blogger Will!), still think it's funny and enjoyable. However, this time around Rockstar Games, the creators of the Grand Theft Auto game series, have taken things to a whole new level of detail by including parodies of America's most famous brands. Included is a parody of Hollister Co. which they have renamed "Swallow Co."

The game itself features its own "internet" that allows you to browse through Swallow Co.'s website where an extremely detailed description of the company is included. That being said, it is evident that the creators of the game wanted to mock the brand's attention towards the American youth by highlighting Hollister's many unorthodox marketing techniques, including Hollister's shirt-less models and the spritz that's sprayed throughout the store. Other mockeries include Hollister's oversized logos on clothing and emphasis on dates that have passed long ago.

Other pages include the Store Locator which asks you to "follow your nose" to find a store and the "Meet Swallow Boy" and "Meet Swallow Girl" page that includes personalized descriptions of two Swallow employees and their teenage lives. Other brands, like American Apparel were also mocked crudely in Rockstar's newest game.

Overall, fans of Abercrombie & Fitch and its off-shoot brands shouldn't be offended by Rockstar's parody, but rather proud that Hollister has become a brand relative enough that it is thought of when creating these types of games. Yes, the game pointed out some of Hollister's weak spots as a brand, but by doing so it shines a light on the importance and influence Hollister Co. has had on the American public in the last decade.

Tales of Vintage! | Abercrombie & Fitch Magazine Fall 2004: The Interludes – Part III...

PRESENTER
C.E.R.

FROM
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

FEATURING
A&F MAGAZINE, FALL 2004

Continuing on with this week's three-part special edition of Tales of Vintage on THE HOTTEST BLOG, check out this Part III of the themed interludes of the premier A&F Magazine Fall 2004...

#GRASS

Among the featured in "Grass" are Hilary Rhoda and also Kellan Lutz who poses alongside another one of my hot girl crushes, Katie Cassidy (When a Stranger Calls, and Monte Carlo, in film; Melrose Place, Gossip Girl [season 4], and Arrow on TV). I've liked Katie since I first saw her back in Melrose Place when I started watching the show in March 2010, and then I was so stoked when she began appearing, in the fall, in season 4 of Gossip Girl. (From the onset of the series when I was 16, I grew up through the latter-half of my teenage years and into my young adulthood with my Upper East Side, NYC, gang. My sister Anna, who had read the books, hooked me to the show in October 2007. I've never cared for the damn books (shallow literature), just the TV series which embraced expanded female and guys' plotlines and demographics. I had the same age as they had in the series in original airing and everything, and so it's a personal bond with the series and characters and actors and I love 'em all for life; see Abercrombie in Gossip Girl post here). But only recently did I realize that I had already seen Katie prior to those shows, back in 2006, in When a Stranger Calls alongside Camilla Belle (another gorgeous girl I liked in my teens, though, unfortunately, never one-time Abercrombie model). As for the male model to take the cake for gorgeous guy, I'll give that one to the long-haired fellow in the first shots alongside my breathtaking Hilary. ;) Everyone thinks Kellan Lutz in hot, and sure, but I'm not diggin' his look back-in-the-day in this A&F Magazine. Sorry #Twihards. Overall, however, I really enjoyed all the photography for "Grass". And I hope you enjoyed my above personal photographic perspective in this post, as well.

This has been the concluding part to what I refer to as "The Interludes" in the premier A&F Magazine Fall 2004. Next week's Tales of Vintage on THE HOTTEST BLOG are the profiled rising stars!

...Stay FIERCE!

Abercrombie & Fitch Taylor Swift Controversy Over Tee...

Taylor Swift at the 2013 Grammy Awards red carpet.  |  (image source)
The lead single to this all-new album-of-a-controversy is the replay of uproar across the media of “Swifties” in dire ire against Abercrombie & Fitch Co. These Swifties are none other than the golden hoards of fans of American country music artist, Taylor Swift. Perhaps you’ve heard of her? LOL. And perhaps you know, too, of her reputation for melodic, globe-charts topping tunes composed from authenticity of angst of some serious heartache breakups. Now with that in mind, consider this: what’s the harm in humor fun with “# more boyfriends than t.s.” ...Let’s just say, hypothetically, that somewhere in the hall of some American school, a half-wit kid proclaims, “Taylor got buuurrrnnneddd.” (To our international readers not familiar with good ole common American vernacular, to get “burned” is to get insulted). What’s not hypothetical is that, while she may not give it higher significance than it being another pathetic annoyance, her Swifties aren’t letting their girl be mocked in such a for-profit, inconsiderate manner.

If one thought breaking up with Taylor Swift was bad, hell hath no fury like a Swfity scorned. Thus, a storm began across Facebook and Twitter of an infuriated sort: yes, yet again flooding Abercrombie & Fitch of another high-tide of upset...again caused in light of the company’s handicap for reason principally marred by inebriation of its ideal of careless fun. A petition on change.org was even initiated, and the phone calls to A&F Public Relations became nothing short of expressive: “I think that this T-shirt was a huge waste of production,” phoned one girl featured by ABC News, “It is the most childish thing I have ever seen in my entire life. I cannot believe that you guys would go as low to do something like that.”

The offending tee as photographed instore.
Imgur/Getty Images (image source)
Abercrombie & Fitch soon enough placed this up on the line for all callers: “Thank you for calling Abercrombie & Fitch public relations. If you are calling regarding the Taylor Swift T-shirt, please note that this is no longer available.” As the Company assured, the tee shirt was brought out in February and circulated out after being marked down for clearance in mid-March. And that is incontrovertible for such is the lifespan of such a “humor tee”.

What A&F also assured through its official twitter account: “Hey #swifties we no longer sell the shirt. We [love] Taylor’s music and think she’s awesome.” (See tweet here). Abercrombie on Twitter: 397,000+. Taylor on Twitter: 29.6 million. Yeah, upsetting a greater mass with far reachable social media influence demands a nice apology.

The funny thing here, though, is that it is an abercrombie kids tee shirt. And that is something everyone is failing to mention and clarify. It's meant in a lighthearted manner. A little jabby, sure, but it is just a kids tee. Although, to be unbiased, you could also say that there would be parents with some mild objections to their child wearing a tee with such a context. But that is a different, and now irrelevant, matter... Another overblown and insignificant "scandal".

Abercrombie & Fitch and The Great Gatsby – Part One: Swingin' New York...

New York City, 1922, as brought to life in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (2013).
Image used for illustrative purposes only.  |  (image source)

NEW YORK, 1922.
THE BUILDINGS WERE HIGHER.
THE PARTIES WERE BIGGER...
THE RESTELESSNESS APROACHED HYSTERIA.

...So croons American actor Tobey Maguire as the narrator, character Nick Carraway, of Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s epic 3D extravaganza, The Great Gatsby. Based on the 1925 Great American Novel by author F. Scott Fitzgerald, the explosive tale takes place in the Summer of 1922 in the environs of New York City and its stoked denizens’ haunts...

The decade of the 1920s is memorably recalled as the extravagant “Roaring Twenties” and as the “Jazz Age” – a term coined by Fitzgerald himself. (In French, it was known as les années folles, “the crazy years”). Jazz, revolutionary music of vibrant African-American origins, was all the rage and sweeping the world, old sport! Being sexy and fun bloomed in unprecedented attitude, among the youthful, as social restraints loosened and the age “generation gap” became obviously pronounced for the first time in society – were you in your 20s and 30s in the 1920s, then your parents would have been youths of the Victorian era. “None of the Victorian mothers – and most of them were Victorian – had any idea how casually their [grown children] were accustomed to being kissed,” wrote Fitzgerald in This Side of Paradise (1920). The Roaring Twenties were the post-World War I period of avant-garde zest: unparalleled prosperity rising of primary economies around the world; New York City becoming the most populated city on the planet, overtaking London, and buildings going up to heights unlike never before; swingin’ cool music and dance, roaring cars, the flourishing of radio and film; sweeping prevalence of electric goods; the rise of “celebrities” (a fascination of Fitzgerald’s); and the flapper-chic girls and hot guys (“sheiks”) making ‘em peppy parties the bee’s knees! Good times...good ole times!

The incredible Roaring Twenties were to be the final period of the historic Ezra Fitch at the helm of Abercrombie & Fitch Co. By the Jazz Age, Abercrombie & Fitch was epic as arguably the world’s grandest sporting goods store. Situated inside its historic location on Madison Avenue, on the corner of Madison and East 47th Street, Abercrombie & Fitch, with its established reputation, had come to even outfit our great American President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt (who wasn’t in office by the ‘20s) for his African safari. (Many others of history’s great figures would pass as clients of A&F in subsequent years: Amelia Earhart, Earnest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen and Admiral Richard Byrd, and the "Duke of Wellington"). Every American President after Teddy, and up to Gerald Ford, is said to have been outfitted by A&F in some manner, and this would, thus, perhaps include President Harding who was incumbent in 1922 by the time-setting of Gatsby. Also memorably of the decade, New York had thrown a “most jubilant parade for Charles Lindbergh, the shy young pilot who, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, had seemingly nothing to do with his generation except allowing us to dream once more of our greatest possibilities.” Abercrombie & Fitch outfitted Lindberg for his historic transatlantic flight, from New York to Paris nonstop, which took off in the morning of 20 May 1927 and concluded famously the following day. It was under Ezra during the 1920s that Abercrombie & Fitch also historically introduced the Chinese game of Mahjong (麻將) in the United States, and becoming the center of the nation’s craze; it became the place in New York to “thumb one’s nose” at Prohibition laws in America (a national ban on the sale, production, and transportation of alcohol; though not illegal in private ownership and consumption of it) by buying a stylish flask; and it opened its first Summer-only location in Hyannis, Massachusetts, for yachting! Incidentally, as history would have it, Ezra retired from Abercrombie & Fitch in 1928 months before the onset of economic collapse, the Great Depression, and the end of the exuberant Jazz Age party that was New York and the world.

Take a look at New York City as it would have been like during the time of Ezra Fitch’s Abercrombie & Fitch and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (though you can see much more of it in awe-inspiring, epic 3D by going to the movies, and partying with Gatsby, with your friends!)...

NEW YORK CITY,
TAKE A BITE
AND SUBWAY DOWN TO
DANCE ALL NIGHT! ”

What you’ve just finished reading are select, revised humor pieces from the magazine, College Humor... In 1922, a young guy named N.H. Swanson graduated from college. The following year, he began College Humor as a periodical anthology of collegiate humor from campuses across America. Going for 35 cents a pop – what was a pricy sum for such a publication back then – it went on to gain a circulation of about 800,000 and was quite the success. Ironically, the thing was mostly filled with moronic humor and cheesy puns...and you can definitely tell of a distinct sexism characteristic of the time. But, as Life Time Books’ This Fabulous Century: The Roaring Twenties (1969) states, “A certain amount of genuine wit, however, did sometimes glimmer feebly in College Humor.” And thus you get The Sitch on Fitch’s selection of pieces in this post.

By the way, “petting” or “to pet” meant to caress intimately; “necking” or “to neck” meant the same thing.

School is out, party at Abercrombie and ole Gatsby’s, and have a fashionable joke or two in hand!

SPOTTED ON THE SCREEN! | HILARITY IN HOLLISTER WITH JIMMY KIMMEL...

Out of all the guys on American late-night, Jimmy Kimmel is the man! Entertaining, cool, and relevant to audiences across demographics, Jimmy throws at ya smartly crafted witty humor - about current events and pop culture - that's lighthearted comedic brilliance perfect for a so chill late night after a long days work. And with cool celebrities and hot artist performances thrown in the mix, his late-night talk show is just awesome. Earlier this year, as a sign of the strength of its performance and following, Jimmy Kimmel Live! began airing on the prime 11:35PM timeslot, now earlier than its previous midnight spot, and in direct competition with The Tonight Show, Late Show with David Letterman, The Colbert Report, and Conan. Debuted in 2003, its the longest running late-night talk show on ABC and now Jimmy is def the hottest thing on at 11:35PM. ...Although he'd probably snort if someone called him "hot". LOL

Anyway, Jimmy's recently done this little segment titled "Jimmy Talks to Kids." It was obviously filmed in one go, but he decided to show them in two parts so far: Part I, he asks them What's the difference between a boy and a girl?; and in Part II, he asks them How old do you have to be to drive? and What would you do if you had a million dollars? In innocence, all of the kids' responses are totally hilarious! There is this one nonchalantly funny little guy, however, wearing a Hollister-branded hoodie (what Dom, our guy in England, tells us is actually a cheap tourist imitation piece), who delivers memorable comments in regards to Jimmy's questions.

Watch 'em below and have yourself a laugh!

How funny was that, right? LOL What are your thoughts? How would you answer Jimmy's questions? :D

Spotted on the Screen! | Abercrombie & Fitch in Gossip Girl...

Our fellow reader M.R.D. pointed out that Abercrombie & Fitch has had its run-ins with the scandalous Upper East Siders of Manhattan's elite in the American TV drama, Gossip Girl. Surely you know of Gossip Girl?! Sex, drinking, scheming, and bringing someone down...it's all in a days worth! And who can resist the hot cast? Sounds like the perfect mix for A&F!

To be precise, A&F has been relevant in the first three seasons of the show...

Season One

~ Gossip Girl: season one, episode four, "Bad News Blair"

During a nightmare of Blair Waldorf's, she rides in a taxi cab down Fifth Avenue and to the store front of Henri Bendel. It's a nightmare for her because she sees her faithful followers attending preferably to Serena van der Woodsen instead of her.

Anyway, before Blair gets to Henri Bendel, her cab passes by the Abercrombie & Fitch flagship store on Fifth Ave...

Season Two

~ Gossip Girl, season two, episode four, "The Ex-Files"

In a plot to break up Dan Humphrey and Serena van der Wooden, Blair's sidekicks Kati and Isabel step in to cause further jealousy between Dan and Serena. It is at a bar where the girls introduce Serena to a guy named Jenns, captain of the Dalton school lacrosse team.

Jenns is played by Tyler Johnson who modeled for Abercrombie & Fitch. Although his photography was not used in marketing campaigns, one of his shots was used for the A&F Casting feature on abercrombie.com...

When Jenns meets up with Serena over drinks, he naturally wears an A&F classic shirt...

Here's when they go hang out and talk with Dan and his date. Jenns talks of his swift moves on the field before Dan mocks Jenns' cocky recount of his game. Serena is not really into Jenns, and you can tell she's not captivated by his athletic tales, but feigns interest - she is merely using Jenns to piss Dan off. Enjoying Dan's annoyance, Serena informs Jenns that "Dan's not a big sports guy." Jenns, states, "I can see that." Both laugh and then Serena furthers snidely, "Yeah, he likes poets. And letters to poets."

Serena then excuses herself for another trip to the bar. Jenns stares at Serena walk away and tells Dan, "Smokin' hot," referring to her. Dan merely gets up and walks off leaving Jenns alone at the table. No one returns...

Season Three

~ Gossip Girl, season three, episode one, "Reversals of Fortune"

In this instance, A&F doesn't make an appearance, but it is mentioned and very explosively.

Model Ashley Hinshaw makes a cameo at the beginning of season three as she walks up to Chuck Bass and begins flirting with him...

She then makes advances on Chuck before being caught by Blair (who is Chuck's girlfriend). Blair informs Ashley, "You may have an Abercrombie campaign [...] but that doesn't give you the right to try to steal someone else's man! Now take your American girl hair and your poreless skin and get OUT!" Ashley replies, "Okay. You're crazy..." and strolls off.

In actuality, Ashley Hinshaw modeled for Hollister for the Spring-Summer 2007 marketing campaign. Blair says it's an "Abercrombie campaign" because it was a marketing campaign by Abercrombie & Fitch Co for its Hollister brand, of course.

 And...

Also of note, Penn Bagdley, who plays Dan, modeled for Abercrombie in the early-2000s. Badgley only appeared in one of the three A&F Magazine (2004-2005) issues and was not used for any marketing campaigns.

Badgley as Dan in season two, episode one, "Summer Kind of Wonderful"

Yeah, Abercrombie's definitely been here and there on the Upper East Side! You can watch Gossip Girl Monday nights at 8:00 PM (Eastern Standard Time) on The CW in America; on ITV2 at 8:00 Monday nights in the UK; and at 21:00 on SIXX in Germany.

UPDATE: Gossip Girl aired its series finale on December 17, 2012, after six seasons. Get the DVDs or stream online (depending on availability in your international region)!
