Detailing the style of a classic pair of pants/chinos but with a revolutionary silhouette and fit, the jogger pant feels like a newborn staple for the ages! The beauty of it is the juxtaposition of it as having the understated dressed-up attitude of a chino with total-laidback, casual, and on the move ease. It's the perfect solution for the modern man!
The roots of the style format of this genius innovation lay partly in what is called "pinrolling" which gained ground in Europe years ago: "In my mind, it came around when sneakers started to become more of a mainstream thing in menswear. Pinrolling meant the sneakers weren’t hidden away and allowed the wearer to show them off fully," shared British marketing manager Simon Lister. The style of the jogger pant came to be in use in Europe and Australia initially. Then, by the turn of the new decade, Michael Huynh and Alex James of Publish redid in fleece a pair of Marc Jacobs cinched sweatpants and, instead of getting what they had originally ordered, got them back from the factory in stretch twill.
"I was like, 'What the hell!' But then we sat back and were like, wait a minute, there’s something here! There’s something very, very unique here! We couldn’t really distinguish what it was, but there was something there. With men, we only have x amounts of silhouettes that we can wear. We can wear: shorts, denim, chinos, swim trunks, etc. You don’t see a typical jogger type pant in twill. So the idea stuck with us and we were like, 'Dang, this is fuckin’ sick!, let’s roll with this.' I was sure the rest of the world wasn’t gonna get it, so we rolled it out slowly to see where it went from there." – Michael Huynh to Luis Ruano, thehundreds.com
After initial trials with the product, the guys began gaining it traction by figuring out ways to make it understood and click with demographics of the male populace. (They had trademarked "Jogger Pant(s)" back in 2010). Inevitably, it took off: By 2013 and into 2014, the jogger pant had spread across like wildfire in the industry.
"We’re not offended, we don’t hate anybody that does the jogger pant. It’s business. If a category is hot and we didn’t jump on it, we’d be shooting ourselves in the foot. [...] The idea is to globalize this category and make it acceptable to the everyday guy. There’s still a very small percentage of guys that can wear a jogger pant. There’s a shit load of people out there that have no idea what a jogger pant is. It’s our duty to show that it’s normal. You have to be comfortable in your own skin. The idea this year is to show that an everyday guy can pull off this look and not look like you’re dressed down because you have a cinched cuff." – Michael Huynh
