Adaptable to all form across space and time, the first incarnations of what would be the trench coat is attributed to the English establishments Burberry and Acquascutum. Specifically made more significant with the gabardine fabric by invention of Thomas Burberry in the late-19th century, the premium outerwear became the select of the British Army during the Great War (World War I; 1914-1918); it was markedly more of an exclusive signature of the higher ranks who opted for the innovative high-quality make and resulting practicality. For being staple by the soldiers during the war, the piece was dubbed the "trench coat" (as the European battlefields were notorious with their trenches riddled about the fronts). Returning soldiers came back integrating into society after the war as civilians and kept and continued to utilize their coats; the outerwear piece from then began gaining more traction into fashion wear and has evolved, adapting in all manner of ways, through to contemporary time in mens and womenswear.
