As the second largest and richest city in Germany, Hamburg's privileged status has further risen as now home to another incredible world-class Abercrombie & Fitch flagship. Located in northern Germany, Hamburg plays it cool with its rich cultural heritage as major tourist destination for German and international travelers. About 1.8 million people, and over 4.3 million in the metropolitan area, give live to this wonderful city. Oh, and Hamburg's port is steeped in history and is the second greatest port in Europe! Cool, enough? Yes, indeed!
And as only the best spot in town will do – one storied in cultural significance and architectural integrity – A&F Hamburg is housed within the historic Alte Post building, on Poststraße, right at the heart of Hamburg, in the Hamburg-Mitte borough. After the city's Great Fire of 1842, the Franco-German architect Alexander de Chateauneuf was put in place to built the Alt Post building between 1845-1847. Its German name Alte Post means "old post" because it was originally the home of the Thurn and Taxis Post as well as Hamburg's post office; and it later became the post office of the North German Confederation.
As the decades passed by throughout the 20th century, various tenants came to occupy Alte Post. By the late-2000s of the 21st century, Alte Post began to undergo renovations to accommodate commercial retail practices. The structure was acquired by Stenham Property in 2007 which invested in the property as one of its German real estate ventures. By February 2011, reputable real estate insiders were hinting that Abercrombie & Fitch was moving into Alte Post and would be occupying around 2,000 square meters (21,000+ square feet). Work for the future flagship did not begin until the latter half of 2011. In a move unlike ever before, A&F announced the opening date for an upcoming store five months ahead when it erected a hoarding wall for A&F Hamburg with the date given as "26.4.2012"...it would be pushed back by Spring 2012. On 16 March 2012, Alte Post was awarded the Special Jury Award by the MIPIM – "the world’s pre-eminent property trade fair, held annually in Cannes," where "each year the most innovative, ambitious and exciting real estate projects battle it out for the prestigious MIPIM Awards."
Ultimately, Alte Post is a "landmark" building in Hamburg and an outstanding example of the distinguishable Nachbrandarchitektur style of Hamburg. Stenham Properties refers to the place as a "prime landmark building in outstanding retail and office location" for being "in the heart of Hamburg's prime retail area." It couldn't be anymore perfect for a brand as Abercrombie & Fitch...
